Pantry Complete

We thought we would start our renovation with a fast easy and very necessary project, creating a usable clean efficient pantry. I really enjoyed ripping out the ratty shelves made of junky particle board and misc planks. It was then I discovered how solid our walls are. Not drywall, but plaster and lathe. After I tore huge holes in the walls and filled them, the spackle took 2 days to dry. Then it sucked up 2 coats of paint. We realized there was no way to get the Metro shelving in the closet without taking it apart and assembling it in place. It all worked out and now we have tons of room for food (and for those of you who know us, you know we need tons of food).

  1. Lucky you having a pantry - but I do have overspill kitchen/pantry storage in what used to be the garage, nicely accessible from the house, where the previous owner installed at least two old fitted-kitchen-cupboard sets he'd taken out of here or elsewhere. He's a joiner, so it was child's play for him. And I benefit from all the drawers etc - ugly but practical -for both diy tools and conserves and little-used but still treasured pots and pans: the fish kettle, the jam pan, the paella pan etc... In my fashion, ie quirky and too cluttered, I sorted my little kitchen first, too. Priority for any new dwelling as far as I'm concerned; second only to a clean, dry mattress and bedding (and somewhere to answer the calls of nature in peace and relative hygiene!!) xxx So pleased for you. A wonderful new adventure.

    1. Yes Char, having a place for food outside the kitchen cabinets is a real plus, a benefit of buying an old house, built when people actually cooked at home

  2. Metrowire for the win! Did I tell you I put one in our laundry closet? I bought a teeny one (shelves were 12" x 24") and also had to assemble it in place, squeezed between the wall and the washing machine.

  3. We looked into buying the white covered wire shelves and standards and it was a small fortune. We already had the metro shelving in the basement and it fit perfectly. Now I can buy more weird food items.
